Client Chal­lenges: Scaling Secure and Efficient In­fra­struc­ture

The in­sti­tu­tion’s data centre was reaching capacity, with legacy rack systems unable to support the latest gen­er­a­tion of high-density servers and net­work­ing equipment. Key chal­lenges included:

  • Thermal man­age­ment: In­creas­ing server densities led to localised hotspots and in­con­sis­tent airflow, threat­en­ing system per­for­mance and hardware longevity.
  • Physical security: As a financial services provider, the client was subject to strict reg­u­la­to­ry re­quire­ments for data pro­tec­tion and physical access control.
  • De­ploy­ment scal­a­bil­i­ty: Rapid business growth required a modular in­fra­struc­ture that could be expanded or re­con­fig­ured with minimal dis­rup­tion.
  • Cable man­age­ment: Dense cabling from high-per­for­mance systems risked blocking airflow and in­creas­ing main­te­nance com­plex­i­ty.

Argent’s Custom-En­gi­neered Solution

Argent partnered closely with the in­sti­tu­tion’s IT and fa­cil­i­ties teams to design a solution tailored to their op­er­a­tional, security, and com­pli­ance re­quire­ments. The project centred on high-security, high-density server racks with in­te­grat­ed features to address each challenge.

Security-First Design

Argent’s racks featured tamper-resistant con­struc­tion, advanced multi-point locking systems, and com­pli­ance with SCEC Class B standards. In­te­grat­ed access control options, including badge readers and remote mon­i­tor­ing, ensured only au­tho­rised personnel could access sensitive equipment. These measures satisfied both internal gov­er­nance and external audit re­quire­ments.

Optimised Thermal Per­for­mance

Custom airflow man­age­ment was en­gi­neered into each enclosure, sup­port­ing hot aisle/cold aisle con­tain­ment strate­gies. Ad­justable baffle systems, high-flow venting, and precision-fitted cable entry points minimised bypass air and prevented re­cir­cu­la­tion. The result was con­sis­tent cooling across all rack units, enabling the safe de­ploy­ment of high-density blade and GPU servers without thermal risk.

In­tel­li­gent Cable Man­age­ment

Argent delivered struc­tured cable pathways and modular cable trays within each rack, reducing in­stal­la­tion time and sim­pli­fy­ing ongoing main­te­nance. Clear sep­a­ra­tion between power and data cabling improved airflow and fa­cil­i­tat­ed rapid iden­ti­fi­ca­tion of con­nec­tions during upgrades or trou­bleshoot­ing. This reduced the risk of ac­ci­den­tal dis­con­nec­tion and con­tributed to overall system re­li­a­bil­i­ty.

Mod­u­lar­i­ty and Scal­a­bil­i­ty

Each Argent rack was specified to allow future expansion, with fully con­fig­urable rack heights and bay layouts. The en­clo­sures supported seamless in­te­gra­tion of in­tel­li­gent PDUs, en­vi­ron­men­tal mon­i­tor­ing, and remote man­age­ment systems. This mod­u­lar­i­ty enabled the financial in­sti­tu­tion to deploy ad­di­tion­al capacity quickly as business demands evolved, without major in­fra­struc­ture overhaul.
